Google will be rolling out the new Google Instant over several days.

Google Instant is an enhancement to the Google Search that shows results as you type. With Google Instant users will be getting instant & faster search results. The thinking behind Google Instant is that the research shows that people type slowly and scan fast, so while the users are typing they can scan the results shown and choose the most appropriate out of that.

google_instant

The most obvious change is that users get to the right content much faster than before because one don’t have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search.” This has been there in various search engines and many others are using this from a long time.

The benefits to this is that the users get instant, faster and more accurate search results. This will certainly help users in searching and most of all choosing the right keyword to get appropriate results.

Google came up with a new product in May called Google TV. The main aspect that Google associated with Google TV was the developer ecosystem, apart from viewing the TV programs you can also Internet TV Application built using Google Mobile OS, Android.

Google is not offering hardware platform like AppleTV or Microsoft Mediaroom, instead, Google has partnered with electronics giant Sony on the hardware side. Google TV launches in the fall inside a new line of Sony TVs, so let’s look at what we can expect to see.

Both Google and Sony has benefited from this deal.

The Google TV is built on the Android platform so it will rely heavily on the Google Chrome browser. With lot more things coming up down the line Google surely wants to take the TV experience to a different level. With Google TV one can watch Photo Slideshow, play games, listen to music and more.

Google will release the Google TV SDK and web APIs for TV. This will enable developers to build applications, which will then be distributed through Android Market.

So wait for the next generation TV and enjoy the new experience.

Simple registration request and response parsing and object representation

This module contains objects representing simple registration requests and responses that can be used with both OpenID relying parties and OpenID providers.

The relying party creates a request object and adds it to the

AuthRequest

object before making      the
checkid_
request to the OpenID provider:

auth_request.addExtension(SRegRequest(required=['email']))

The OpenID provider extracts the simple registration request from the OpenID request using

SRegRequest.fromOpenIDRequest

, gets the user’s approval and data, creates a

SRegResponse

object and adds it to the
id_res
response:

sreg_req = SRegRequest.fromOpenIDRequest(checkid_request.message)
# [ get the user's approval and data, informing the user that
# the fields in sreg_response were requested ]
sreg_resp = SRegResponse.extractResponse(sreg_req, user_data)
sreg_resp.toMessage(openid_response.fields)

The relying party uses

SRegResponse.fromSuccessResponse

to extract the data from the OpenID response:

sreg_resp = SRegResponse.fromSuccessResponse(success_response)

Microsoft has announced that they will shut down Microsoft Analytics platform. The date decided for this is December 31st 2009 and Microsoft plans to re-direct existing clients to services like Google Analytics, Yahoo Analytics and others.

After swapping out Ian, the smart lead person of the product last year, this doesn’t really come to a surprise to me. The entire product wasn’t thought through or planned out. Even the existing version still had and has major issues and was always released with major delays.

Last flaw, which personally bothered me, was the upgrade to a version, which runs solely on MS Silverlight. Overall it’s really unfortunate to see Microsoft dropping another promising product. Especially since it was connected directly with MS’s Adcenter.

I was just wondering how google has progressed from its search engine to creating new icons for IT world. One of them was the google reader, i found this very interesting how the google reader caters to everybody needs. I am working on doctors & surgeons social networking site, there the client came up with an idea to implement google reader in the project to show users about the updates that they have in their baskets. I was chosen to create a POC(Proof of Concepts) for that. I took that as a challenge and created one very basic version of it. Here i would like to share with you the POC and the code.

Google isn’t just talking about hosting applications in the cloud any more. Tonight at 9pm PT they’re launching Google App Engine (Update: The site is live), an ambitious new project that offers a full-stack, hosted, automatically scalable web application platform. It consists of Python application servers, BigTable database access (anticipated here and here) and GFS data store services.At first blush this is a full on competitor to the suite of web services offered by Amazon, including S3 (storage), EC2 (virtual servers) and SimpleDB (database).

Unlike Amazon Web Services’ loosely coupled architecture, which consists of several essentially independent services that can optionally be tied together by developers, Google’s architecture is more unified but less flexible. For example, it is possible with Amazon to use their storage service S3 independently of any other services, while with Google using their BigTable service will require writing and deploying a Python script to their app servers, one that creates a web-accessible interface to BigTable.

What this all means: Google App Engine is designed for developers who want to run their entire application stack, soup to nuts, on Google resources. Amazon, by contrast, offers more of an a la carte offering with which developers can pick and choose what resources they want to use.

Developers simply upload their Python code to Google, launch the application, and can monitor usage and other metrics via a multi-platform desktop application.

More details from Google:

Today we’re announcing a preview release of Google App Engine, an application-hosting tool that developers can use to build scalable web apps on top of Google’s infrastructure. The goal is to make it easier for web developers to build and scale applications, instead of focusing on system administration and maintenance.

Leveraging Google App Engine, developers can:

Write code once and deploy. Provisioning and configuring multiple machines for web serving and data storage can be expensive and time consuming. Google App Engine makes it easier to deploy web applications by dynamically providing computing resources as they are needed. Developers write the code, and Google App Engine takes care of the rest.

Absorb spikes in traffic. When a web app surges in popularity, the sudden increase in traffic can be overwhelming for applications of all sizes, from startups to large companies that find themselves rearchitecting their databases and entire systems several times a year. With automatic replication and load balancing, Google App Engine makes it easier to scale from one user to one million by taking advantage of Bigtable and other components of Google’s scalable infrastructure.

Easily integrate with other Google services. It’s unnecessary and inefficient for developers to write components like authentication and e-mail from scratch for each new application. Developers using Google App Engine can make use of built-in components and Google’s broader library of APIs that provide plug-and-play functionality for simple but important features.

Google App Engine: The Limitations

The service is launching in beta and has a number of limitations.

First, only the first 10,000 developers to sign up for the beta will be allowed to deploy applications.

The service is completely free during the beta period, but there are ceilings on usage. Applications cannot use more than 500 MB of total storage, 200 million megacycles/day CPU time, and 10 GB bandwidth (both ways) per day. We’re told this equates to about 5M pageviews/mo for the typical web app. After the beta period, those ceilings will be removed, but developers will need to pay for any overage. Google has not yet set pricing for the service.

One current limitation is a requirement that applications be written in Python, a popular scripting language for building modern web apps (Ruby and PHP are among others widely used). Google says that Python is just the first supported language, and that the entire infrastructure is designed to be language neutral. Google’s initial focus on Python makes sense because they use Python internally as their scripting language (and they hired Python creator Guido van Rossum in 2005).
